Willie Meg (Bankhead) Johnson

Mrs. Willie Meg Bankhead Johnson, 78, formerly of Hickory Grove, SC, passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2019 in New York.  Services in New York will be provided by Stradford Home for Funerals, 1241 Castleton Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10310.  Visitation in New York will be from 2:00-4:00 pm, Saturday, January 5, 2019 at Fellowship Baptist Church, 3036 Richmond Terrace, Staten Island, NY.  Funeral services will follow at 4:00 pm.

Born January 3, 1940 in York County, South Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Willie Floyd Bankhead, Sr. and Martha Meeks Bankhead. 

The fifth of ten children, she was educated in York Public Schools before moving to Staten Island, New York.  Her work ethic was unmatched, as she tirelessly labored to provide for her family.  Willie was employed by New Brighton Manor/Staten Island Care Center for 30 years, while also working part-time at JC Penney for over 25 years.

Willie loved her family and doting on her grandchildren.  She also enjoyed her monthly luncheons with her former JC Penney co-workers.  She was an avid sports fan, with Kobe Bryant and the NY Giants amongst her most admired.  Willie's musical interests ranged from Tupac Shakur to Celine Dion.  One of her favorite past times was to watch Dancing With the Stars with her granddaughter, Mya.

Preceding her in death are her brothers, Johnny Bankhead and Willie Floyd Bankhead, Jr; sister, Tecola Isom; and brothers-in-law, Howard Rainey and  John Robert Sanders.

Surviving to cherish fond memories are three children, Melissa Johnson Greene (Michael), and Christopher Johnson both of Staten Island, NY, and Dwayne “Eric” Woodson (Renita) of Atlanta, GA; three grandchildren, Maliyah and Mya Greene of Staten Island, NY, and Royce Woodson of Atlanta, GA; sisters, Sarah Rainey, Marjorie “Baby Ray” Sanders and Magdalene Rawlinson all of York, SC, and Arby D. Bankhead of West Palm Beach, FL; brothers, Stancy Bankhead (Ollie) and Carl Bankhead both of Hickory Grove, SC; two sisters-in-law, Rose Bankhead of San Jose, CA and Geneva Bankhead of York, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Local services will be 1:00 pm, Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at Wright Funeral Home.  Burial will follow at Lakeview Memory Gardens in York, SC. 

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:00 pm, prior to the service.
