William Powell, III Obituary

Mr. William James Powell, III (Will) left us on January 5, 2025. He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his wife and children in Greensboro, North Carolina, leaving behind a legacy of generosity, strength, and integrity.

Will was born to Billy James and Mae Oria (Lindsay) Powell on May 4, 1960, in the red hills of Chester County, South Carolina. After graduating from Lockhart High School, he attended Baptist College at Charleston, now Charleston Southern University, on a track scholarship and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Marketing and Economics.

An accomplished entrepreneur, he founded and operated Envirosource Landscaping for 20 years. Later, his passion for helping others led him to a career in personal training, founding Powell Fitness, where he coached countless clients to their fullest potential physically, spiritually, and mentally. Will was fiercely devoted to the athletes he coached, relishing their accomplishments without taking any credit for them.

Will was a distinguished and passionate athlete, winning the CrossFit Games world championship four times in three different age divisions as a masters competitor. He was also a decorated natural bodybuilder. He is remembered by his fellow competitors for being as humble as he was formidable.

Will was a man of God whose walk with Christ was evident through his words and actions. He loved farm life and tending to the land, adding value and beauty everywhere he went. He enjoyed slow walks around his yard and roaming through the woods. He loved a well-earned meal after a hearty workout. His favorite joys were the simple ones. Will was a country boy with a thirst for knowledge which he fed with voracious reading.

Will is survived by his devoted wife, Terry Ellis Powell; daughter, Jessica Martin (husband Isaiah) and his sons, Chip (wife Paula and daughter Lina) and Isaac Powell. He is also survived by his parents, Billy James and Mae Oria Powell; a sister, Andrena Powell-Baker, and brothers Andre Powell and Adam Powell, as well as their spouses and children; two uncles, Eugene Lindsay and Rev. Cardell Lindsay; one aunt, Frances Powell Pratt and a host of cousins, relatives and friends.
