Vernon Lee Odom

Mr. Vernon L. Odom, "Big O," of 1055 Albert Street, Rock Hill, transitioned from this earthly life to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 7, 2022 at his home.  He was born November 15, 1963 in Rock Hill to Mary Odom Cureton and the late Robert Cureton, Jr.

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm, Wednesday, April 13, 2022 at St. James United Methodist Church, 5058 Saint James Church Road, York, SC 29745, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. 

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Vernon married Erica Hughes on May 11, 2002 at Wesley United Methodist Church in York, South Carolina.  One of his favorite bible verses about marriage was Ephesians 5:28 “In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself."

He attended the public schools of Rock Hill and graduated from Rock Hill High School 1982. He worked as a forklift driver for Stanley Black & Decker. He loved to cook on the grill and fellowship with friends and family. His favorite football team was the Pittsburgh Steelers.  

At an early age, he knew the importance of having the Lord in his life. He became a dedicated member of Nazareth Baptist Church in Rock Hill, South Carolina. In his early years, he was a member of the Usher Board. Then he became a member of Saint James United Methodist Church in 2021 and served on the United Methodist Men.

Vernon is preceded in death by his father, Robert Cureton Jr.; brother, Corey Cureton; two nephews, Tavoris Cureton and Kenneth B. Steele, Jr.  

Vernon is survived by his wife of 19 years, Erica Odom: son, Dennis Mitchell Jr. (Raven) of Lake Wylie, SC; mother, Mary Cureton of Rock Hill, SC; brothers, Robert (Angel) Cureton, III of Baltimore, MD, Ardell (Annette) Steele, Robert (Kimberly) Steele, Kenneth (Jennifer) Steele and Carl Steele all of Rock Hill, SC;  sisters, Yvonne (Bryan) Walker, Gloria Cureton and Theresa (Jerirod) Caldwell all of Rock Hill, SC; father-in-law, David (Carol) Hughes of Rock Hill, SC; mother-in-law, Ruth Hughes of York, SC; one brother-in-law, Anthony (Ann) Hughes of Charlotte, NC; three sisters-in-law, Patricia Hughes of York, SC, Lajetta Adams-Hughes of Concord, NC, and Schenita Goston of Rock Hill, SC.  He leaves behind one grandson, Joshua X. Mitchell of Lake Wylie, SC and one godson, Markael A. Sanders II of Filbert, SC; his special friends: Arthur G. Anderson, Sam Roseborough, Sam McCoy, Roy Miller, Markis Leakes, and Patrick Siebles. He also leaves behind a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and an abundance of relatives and friends.
