Thomas Wright, 86, of York, S.C., and formerly of Bronx, N.Y., departed this life on Friday, June 14, 2024, at Terra Bella Nursing Home in Rock Hill, S.C. Born on October 15, 1937, in Brooklyn, New York, he was the beloved son of the late Ella Mae Wright Jefferson.
Thomas graduated from high school in 1955 in Hempstead, Long Island, N.Y. In 1962, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving honorably until 1965 during the Vietnam Era.
Following his military service, Thomas pursued his passion for music and radio. As an avid singer, he frequently performed at jazz clubs in Manhattan, New York, developing a loyal following. His stage presence was unmatched, bringing both himself and the audience to life with his electric performances.
In 1965, Thomas began a long and distinguished career as a banking associate with Brown Brothers Harriman & Co., a major investment and securities banking firm in New York City. Known for his exceptional work ethic, Thomas worked diligently for 37 years, retiring in 2002. His perfect attendance record and outstanding job performance earned him numerous recognition awards throughout his career. He mastered all facets of the banking industry, making him a valued and respected employee.
Thomas enjoyed a rich life filled with varied interests and hobbies. He loved dining out with friends and family, listening to jazz music, singing at local jazz clubs, dancing, playing golf, and spending quality time with his loved ones.
Thomas is preceded in death by his mother, Ella Mae Wright; his oldest brother, Robert Wright; his niece, Lamise Byrd; and his sisters-in-law, Laura Smith and Laura Wright.
He is survived by his cherished daughter, Lisa Wright; his loving granddaughters, Brittny Wright Turbeville (Trey) and Alexis Raymond; his devoted brothers, William Wright and Eugene Smith; his nephews, William Wright Jr., Wendell Wright, Jarmont Smith, Eugene Smith, Malcolm Wright, and Maleek Wright; his nieces, Tamika Byrd and Shariffa Byrd; and his dear friend and sister, Genia Valentine. Thomas also leaves behind a host of other loving nephews, nieces, relatives, and friends in the NYC area.
The family extends special thanks and acknowledgements to the staff at Terra Bella Nursing Home in Rock Hill, S.C., the staff at Providence Care Hospice in Rock Hill, S.C., and the staff at Brookdale Senior Living in Charlotte, North Carolina, for their care, professionalism, love, and patience.
Thomas Wright's legacy of dedication, passion, and love will forever be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life Service will be 2:00 pm, Saturday, July 13, 2024 at the funeral home.
Interment services were held, 3:00 pm, Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia, SC.
