Funeral services will be 12:00 noon, Sunday, March 27, 2022 at White Hill AME Zion Church in York, SC with Rev. Kinston Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Grand View Memorial Park in Rock Hill, SC. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Saturday, March 26th at White Hill AME Zion Church. Mrs. Sitrena Starnes Berry of 1216 Heckle Boulevard, Rock Hill, SC, entered into her eternal rest on Tuesday, March 22, 2022. Mrs. Berry was born on August 15, 1936 in York County, SC, to the late Samuel and Mary Starnes.
Sitrena attended York School District in her early years and graduated from Highland High School of Gastonia, NC. She furthered her education graduating from Clinton College in 1976 and 2 years later received her Bachelors in Education from Winthrop University. She was a passionate worker for Rock Hill School District Three as a Special Education Teacher until retirement in 1995.
Mrs. Berry accepted Christ at an early age and joined White Hill AME Zion Church. As part of her spiritual growth, she became a faithful part of various aspects of the church. She became a Deaconess, member of the Musical Choir, where she served as president for many years, Usher Board, Sunday School Teacher, and an integral member of the culinary staff. Through her continuous commitment to others, she became the Rock Hill District W.H. & O.M. Society YAMS coordinator. Her passion was to mentor children, encouraging them to excel in education and develop a personal relationship with Christ. Her hard work was honored by naming a Rock Hill District Oratorical Contest and White Hill Family Sing-a-Rama after her.
Sitrena was a Founding Member of The Order of Eastern Star, White Hill Chapter No. 350. She served as Worthy Matron for 17 years, as well as Associate Matron, and Secretary. She was also a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, Rock Hill Chapter, White Hill Church Aid Society, and The AP&B Society.
She is preceded in death by the love of her life of 54 years, William O. Berry, Sr.; mothers-in-law: Mattie B. Neely and Peninnah B. Lowry; father-in-law: Arthur Lowry, Sr.; son-in-law: Bennie Roberts; grandson: Justice Freeman; 3 sisters, 4 brothers, 2 sisters-in-law and 2 brothers-in-law.
Left to cherish fond memories of her are two sons: William O. Berry, Jr. (Rev. Deloris) and Jonathan Andre Berry (Victoria) both of Rock Hill, SC; four daughters: Rhonda B. Massey (Ronnie) of York, SC, Donna B. Long (Rev. William N.), and Sitrena LaVerne Berry, both of Rock Hill, SC, and Brenda S. Roberts of Hickory, NC; 3 sisters: Johnnie S. Gray of York, SC, Georgia Juanita Glenn of Chicago, IL, and Rose S. Kelly (James) of Columbia, SC; two brothers: Oliver M. Starnes and Perry L. Starnes of York, SC; 3 sisters-in-law: Quincy Starnes of Morristown, NJ, Bobbie Q. Berry of Charlotte, NC, and Emma Lee Baxter of Rock Hill, SC; 2 brothers-in-law: Arthur Lowry, Jr. (Ruby) and Phillip Lowry both of York, SC; 10 grandchildren: Darlene Roberts, Marquaint Johnson (Tonya), Brilton Berry, Adrienne Berry, Sheteaka Berry-Edwards (Wylie), Candice Berry, William Long, Chris Long, Khadijah Robinson, and Alysa Berry; 9 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandson, 2 special sons: Robert Lee Berry (Sadie) and Jerry Oates, a special caretaker: Edna Barber Williams, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
