Ms. Sarah Catherine McClain of York, SC was born July 30, 1935 in York County, SC to the late Jack Benjamin McClain and Essie Barnette McClain.
Sarah attended Jefferson School. She joined Gold Hill Baptist Church at an early age. She was one of the first members of the first Gospel Choir organized in Gold Hill.
Even with some physical challenges, she was a great home maker and cook. Some people would say that her fried chicken, pinto beans, corn bread, candied yams and sweet tea was to die for. She loved singing and enjoyed sitting on the porch and talking with friends and family. She also enjoyed listening to singing and preaching on her radio (static and all LOL) all day every day. Some of her famous sayings were “Listen, Learn and Obey,” her great-grandchildren can be a witness to those words; “Every shut eye ain’t sleep” and “Every goodbye ain’t gone,” were some sayings her siblings can be a witness to. She loved the Lord and enjoyed going from church to church for revival services, with her great friend the late Samuel “Frog” Gilmore. Sarah’s favorite songs that she would often sing were “Anyway, you bless me Lord, I’ll be satisfied” and “I Thank you Lord, you let me see another year.”
