Samuel Sanders known to his family and friends as “Sam” entered into his final resting place on Thursday, December 3, 2020 at 2:35 p.m. at Piedmont Medical Center. Sam, the second child of fifteen children, was born on March 12, 1933 to the late Estell Sanders and Nancy Wilkes Sanders.
Although Sam was born in Sharon, South Carolina, the family moved to York, South Carolina, where he attended the York County Public Schools. He joined Gold Hill Baptist Church, where he served faithfully for many years. He was independent and easy going but stern in his beliefs. He was a caring and devoted son and father who looked out for the interest and wellbeing of his family.
Sam was taught to get up early, go to work on time and treat others with common courtesy and respect. He worked diligently on the farm in York, SC, gaining much wisdom and work ethics, which sustained him throughout life.
Sam left home at the age of nineteen, with Frank Thompson, heading to Washington, DC in search of employment. After many jobs, he started his own successful company, Grant and Sanders (G&S) Roofing, where he worked until his retirement. He provided employment, shelter and finances to many family members and friends who moved up North. He always found a way to provide for those in need. Upon retirement, he returned to his hometown of York, South Carolina, married his beautiful wife, Sarah and reunited with his home church Gold Hill.
Sam was a devoted Dallas Cowboys football fan. He enjoyed fishing, cooking, pitching horseshoes, games of billiards and playing cards every weekend. He was a family man who enjoyed his sisters cooking and watching sports with his brothers. Sam also loved to travel with his family. Sam cherished trips to Savannah, Georgia, Charleston, SC and the NC Mountains. During his last trip, he rode up the Blue Ridge Parkway to its summit of Mt. Pisgah. It was his very first Mountain experience. There he stood overlooking the breath-taking mountain valleys created by God. There he found solace and peace. He smiled and marveled at the colors and all of God's handiworks in those mountains.
In addition to his parents, Sam is predeceased by a son, Maurice Sanders, a sister, Elois Sanders Wilson, and three brothers, Ted Lewis Sanders, Leroy Sanders and Arthur Allen Sanders.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife Sarah McClain Sanders; two daughters, Diane Cassell Scott (Levi) of Enfield, NC and Delois Cassell Moore (Eugene) of Lake Wylie, SC; surviving siblings: Annie S. Hollis of Columbia, SC, JB Sanders (Jemma) of Washington, DC, Margaret Smith (William) of York, SC, Perry Sanders (Josephine) of Oxon Hill, MD, Nancy Faye Love of Columbia, SC, Richard Palmer Sanders (Rosiland) of New Carrollton, MD, Carl Sanders of York, SC, Dennis Sanders (Helen) of York, SC, Janice Thompson of York, SC, and Jocelyn Fair (Johnny) of Gastonia, NC; his stepchildren: Melvin McClain (Mikki), Rev. William McClain (Earlene), Alma Kennedy, Jackie Simpson (James), and Donnie McClain; nine grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
