Obituary

Mrs. Rubye White Lowry, 80, of 101 Maiden Lane, York, SC, gained her key to eternal life Wednesday, December 21, 2022 on her 59th Wedding Anniversary. Born July 23, 1942 in York, SC, she was a daughter the late Nancy White Burris and the late Reverend James Garvin.

Rubye was baptized at Langrum Branch Baptist Church at an early age, and served faithfully in various capacities: Sunshine Band, Usher Board, Musical Choir, Missionary Society, and the Deaconess Board.

Rubye attended Jefferson High School in York, SC, graduating in the Class of 1959. She earned her Associate Degree from Friendship Junior College in Rock Hill, SC, and her Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics from Barber-Scotia College in Concord, NC.  While at Barber-Scotia, she joined the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

After graduation, Rubye worked as a commercial seamstress for many years at various locations in the Rock Hill-York area.  Later, she continued to use her expertise and love for sewing to provide service to her church, family and friends.

On December 21, 1963, Rubye married the love of her life, Arthur Lowry, Jr., with whom she was blessed to celebrate 59 years.

She was also a good cook and prepared many sumptuous meals and treats for her family and friends. Rubye loved children and cared for many as if they were her own. As they grew up and became adults, they never forgot her love and kindness—frequently showing up for visits later in life and showering her with gifts.

In addition to her husband, left to cherish her loving memories are: one daughter, Karen Lowry; one grandson, Kelton Lowry; one god-daughter, Hailey D. Coe; eight siblings: Mary Rose Burris, Sally Burris, Mildred Hemphill, Linda Jordan, Lonnie Burris, Jr., Henry Burris, Albert Burris (Evette), and John Garvin (K’Shawna); four aunts: Carrie Douglas (Fred), Dorothea Junious, Rosa M. White, and Estelle White; one uncle, Alexander White (Yvonne); one brother-in-law, Clarence Lowry; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral serivces will be 12:00 noon, Tuesday, December 27, 2022 at New Home AME Zion Church in York, SC with Pastor H.A. Gregory, III officiating, and Rev. Richard Pickering, Sr. eulogizing.  Burial will follow at Grandview Memorial Park, 620 S. Cherry Rd, Rock Hill, SC.

Visitation will be 5:00 to 6:30 pm, Monday, December 26, 2022 at the funeral home.  Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will perform final rites at 5:30 p.m.
