Roscoe Cathcart Obituary

Mr. Roscoe Thomas Cathcart, 79, of 439 Hidden Lakes Drive, York, South Carolina transitioned from the life to eternal life on Saturday, May 27, 2023.  He was born November 1, 1943 to the late Barry and Emma (Banks) Cathcart.

Roscoe graduated from Emmett Scott High School in Rock Hill, South Carolina in 1962, and later attended York Technical College, where he obtained certification to operate in the lab at Celanese Corporation.  He worked at Celanese for 38 years until the plant closed.  He then worked for York School District One Transportation for 14 more years. 

Following high school, Roscoe served in the United States Army, but spent the bulk of his military career serving in the Army Reserves, retiring as a Sergeant Major after 33 years of service.  He was baptized in Christ at an early age, becoming a member of New Hope United Methodist Church.  

Roscoe married Mary Louise Murray Cathcart in 1969, and their union lasted 55 years. After their marriage, he joined White Hill AME Zion Church, where he served as a Preacher’s Steward for many years.  He was also a member of White Hill Masonic Lodge #462, and a member of White Hill Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #350.

Roscoe is preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Cathcart and David “Billy” Cathcart; and two brothers-in-law, James “Jimmy” Murray and Leon Walker.

He leaves to cherish loving memories his wife of 55 years, Louise Murray Cathcart of the home; two daughters, Trinae C. Perry of Rock Hill, SC and Ernettor C. Belton (Tajuan) of Greensboro, NC; four grandchildren: Trianetta Perry, Brodrick Perry, Jadria Jones and Jaylon Jones; six great-grandchildren: Jaiden Perry, Ahmad Perry, Hunter Perry, M. Ivory Pagie, Vilei Pagie, and Cataleya Perry; four sisters, Mae Cathcart of Philadelphia, PA, Sarah Copeland and Ada Cathcart both of Baltimore, MD, and Mattie McKnight of Hampton, VA; two brothers, James Cathcart of Baltimore, MD and John Cathcart (Donna) of Wilson, NC; two sisters-in-law, Vanessa W. Neely (Charles) of Jacksonville, FL and Debbie Walker of York, SC; three brothers-in-law, Tony D. Walker (Christtina) of Gastonia, NC, Stanley “Bear” Walker (Sabrina) of Jacksonville, FL, and Donald Walker of Lancaster, SC; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be 10:00 am, Saturday, June 3, 2023 at White Hill AME Zion Church in York, SC, with Rev. Timothy Mayers, Sr. officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Grandview Memorial Park, 620 S. Cherry Road, Rock Hill, SC. 

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 to 7:30 pm on Friday, June 2nd.  White Hill Lodge #462 will observe Masonic Rites from 6:15 to 6:45 pm.  ***Please Note:  NO entry or exit will be allowed until the rites are concluded.***
