Mr. Robert Burris, 76, of 874 Mason Dickson Road, York, peacefully departed this earthly life Saturday, December 7, 2019 at home. Born May 25, 1943 in McConnells, SC, he was a son of the late Walker "Bud" and Carrie Wade Burris.
Funeral services will be 1:00 pm, Thursday, December 12, 2019 at Fishing Creek Baptist Church in York, SC, with Rev. Reginald McClean officiating. Burial with Masonic Rites will follow at Lakeview Memory Gardens in York.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 at Fishing Creek Baptist Church, where Eastern Star Rites will be observed.
Robert was educated in York Public Schools. He worked at Meritor, formerly known as Huntley’s of York then Rockwell International as a maintenance technician. He worked 35 years without any absences and was recognized for his dedication upon retirement. While employed and after retirement, Robert fully used his gifts and talents to help others. He was a skilled carpenter, electrician, plumber, landscaper, gardener, and could repair just about anything. He was a tremendous blessing to his community.
Robert loved the Lord. Initially, he was a member of Galilee Baptist Church. He served as a Trustee, Sunday School teacher, and Sunday School Superintendent. He sang on the hymn choir as well. Later, Robert joined Fishing Creek Baptist Church. He continued teaching and singing on the hymn and men’s choirs. Additionally, he was Chairman of the Deacon Ministry.
Robert valued community service and supported various organizations whose missions emphasized Biblical principles. He was a charter member of the York Optimist Club and Shepherd’s Fold AP & B Society. He was Past Master of White Hill Masonic Lodge #462, Past Patron of White Stone Chapter #241 Order of the Eastern Star (OES), and a member of White Hill Chapter #350 OES. Additionally, he supported the NAACP and made charitable donations to various institutions.
In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his brother Willie Marion Burris and four sisters: Lillie Mae Fox, Odessa Hemphill, Elois Wilform-Malcolm, Vestrula Morrison, and Patricia A. Burris.
Robert leaves to cherish his loving memories, his devoted wife of 52 years, Lillie Gill Burris; five children, Deborah Ashbury (Jerry) of York, SC, Robert S. Burris (Betty) and Stephen Burris (D’Anna) both of Rock Hill, SC, Lara Harris (Demetrius) of Mint Hill, NC, and Walker Burris of Westland, MI; eight grandchildren, Demetrius Burris (Michelle), William Burris (Lori), Tavares Burris (Ashley) all of York, SC, Ashley Dean (Brian) of Great Falls, SC, Robert L. Burris (Asayer) of Fort Mill, SC, De’Mara Harris of Richmond, VA, Daron Harris of Mint Hill, NC, and Walker A. Burris of Rochester Hills, MI; sixteen great-grands; one aunt, Lilly Taylor of Winston-Salem, NC; three sisters, Maggie Burris, Frances Black (Richard), and Shirley Simpson, and one brother, Hazel Burris all of York, SC; three brothers-in-law, Reverend Dennis McCleave (Belle) of Hickory Grove, SC, James Gill of Rock Hill, SC, and Arthur Gill of Honolulu, Hawaii; three sisters-in-law, Nancey Gill, Shirley Gill, and Linda Logan (Tony) all of York, SC; as well as a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
Robert was a man of action and few words. He was God-fearing, humble, and well respected.
