Richard Louis Giovanoni

Mr. Richard Louis Giovanoni Sr., 92, of York, SC and formerly of Hagerstown, Maryland, passed away June 5, 2022, while a resident of White Oak Manor in York, SC.
Born in West Bridgewater, MA, on March 29, 1930, he was a son of the late Joseph and Sara (Cassiani) Giovanoni.
He attended West Bridgewater schools and was a graduate of Northeastern University, Boston, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering. He worked for Westinghouse in Bath, NY, and later on for Fairchild Industries in Hagerstown, MD where he resided until 2019 when he moved to York, SC. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hagerstown.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, an avid astronomer recording sunspots for AAVSO for years and won a National Gold Hammer Award from Popular Science Magazine for a telescope he created.
He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 53 years Mary Josephine Jackson, who he met at Northeastern University where they both attended; son, Richard Giovanoni Jr.; daughter, Mary Giovanoni Mattax; sister, Ann Giovanoni; and brother, Joseph Giovanoni.
He is survived by his sister, Margaret Mary Utka, West Bridgewater, MA; daughter, Lynda Marie Heffernan and husband, Thomas, York, SC; son, Father Peter Giovanoni, Ridge, MD; son, Steven Giovanoni, and wife, Lisa, Shertz, TX; four grandchildren: Mary Mattax, Fairfax, VA, Emma Edgeson and husband, Adam, Martinsburg, WV, Matthew Giovanoni and wife, Chris, and Tyler Giovanoni, Texas; as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00am Friday, June 17, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 17630 Virginia Ave., Hagerstown. Father Peter Giovanoni will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Williamsport, MD. Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd, Hagerstown, Maryland is in charge of Mr. Giovanoni's continued services.
