Richard Byrd Obituary

Richard Glenn Byrd
February 23, 1952 – November 4, 2025

Richard Glenn Byrd, 73, of Clover, South Carolina, passed away peacefully at home on November 4, 2025, after a valiant battle with cancer. Born in Gaston County, North Carolina, Glenn was the son of the late Katherine Tench Byrd and Lyle Woodrow Byrd. In addition to his parents, Glenn was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 22 years, Charlotte Ann Brown Byrd; sisters Carolyn Byrd, Gail Lingerfelt, and Patsy Harris; and brothers Ross Byrd and Rex Byrd.

He is survived by his brother Jerry Byrd of Pleasant Garden, NC, and his brothers-in-law Marshall Harris of Dallas, NC, Marty Brown of Orient, OH, and Phil Brown of Junction City, OH. Glenn is also survived by his stepchildren: Michael Alan Brown; Leann Wehrheim of Springfield, MO; Jennifer Hawley (Brian) of Clover, SC; and Amy Allen of Columbia, SC. He leaves behind nine cherished step-grandchildren—River, Stephen, Savannah, Michael, Ashton, Nicholas, Madison, Hanna, and Camryn—and three step-great-grandchildren. Glenn was a treasured uncle to Jody Byrd, Justin Byrd, Beverly Gentry, Gary Lingerfelt, Emmit Byrd, and Tammy Wilson, all of whom loved him dearly and checked on him often.

A proud veteran, Glenn served his country with honor in the United States Army for seven years, achieving the rank of Sergeant. After his military service, he worked for many years as a farmhand at Howe Dairy in Gastonia, where he found joy in hard work and community. When the dairy closed, Glenn continued his career at Georgia Pacific, retiring after years of dedicated service.

Glenn had a passion for life’s simple pleasures. He loved attending festivals, rodeos, and tractor shows, but his greatest joy was found in fishing—whether alone in quiet reflection or with loved ones by his side.

On October 24, 2025, at 7:23 p.m., Glenn accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior—a moment of peace and transformation that brought him deep comfort in his final days. His family rejoices in the assurance that Glenn is now in the presence of his Savior, whole and free.

As Jesus said in John 5:24:
Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment but has passed from death to life.”
He will be remembered for his strength, humility, and unwavering love for his family. Glenn’s legacy also includes the steadfast friendship of his best friend Billy, who remained by his side and kept him company through the years following Charlotte’s passing. Their bond was a source of comfort and laughter, and Billy’s presence brought Glenn immeasurable joy.
Glenn will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Lake Wylie Christian Assembly, 5766 Charlotte Hwy, Clover, SC 29710. All who knew and loved Glenn are welcome to attend and honor his memory. A celebration meal to follow.
