Almighty God, in His infinite wisdom and love, touched the heart of His beloved son in Christ, Reverend Jacob Darby Burris, on May 15, 2021 at his home, and he entered peacefully into eternal rest.
Rev. Jacob Burris, a son of the late Emma Bowen Burris and James Matthew Burris, Sr., was born April 24, 1945 in York, South Carolina.
He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1964. He was a honor student during most of his school years. His favorite subject was History and he was selected “Cutest Male” of his class.

Burris joined Langrum Branch Baptist Church in York, SC, where he sang on the musical choir, was a member of the Brotherhood and the Deacon Board. He was called into the ministry early in life. He preached his initial sermon at Langrum Branch Baptist Church. H was licensed into the ministry on November 13, 1977 and Ordained into the ministry on June 29, 1980. Later, the Spirit led him to believe he should prepare himself for his great calling. He attended Friendship School of Theology in Rock Hill, SC and Metrolina Theological Extension in Charlotte, NC. Rev. Burris received certificates of studies from both schools, but of all the certificates, he was most grateful for his B.A. degree— his “Born Again” status. Rev. Burris pastored three churches: Weeping Mary Baptist Church in Rock Hill, SC, Second Wilson Baptist Church in Chester, SC, and Mount Hopewell Baptist Church in Rodman, SC. He was also the interim pastor of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Harrisburg, NC.
Rev. Burris is preceded in death by his daughter, Paula Burris; a brother, James Burris, Jr.; and two sisters, Mary Lene Knox and Christine Hall.
[Diagram Description automatically generated] He leaves to cherish fond memories his wife, Mamie Burris; two daughters, Angela Knighton (Solomon) and Tracy Owens (Leonard); three grandsons, Jairus Burris, Jeremiah Burris and Clenekeous “CJ” Owens; one great-grandson, Jayce Burris; three brothers, Lewis Burris (Billie), Joshua Burris (Dorothy) and Joseph Burris (Mary); two sisters, Hattie Williams (Adam) and Ruby Boulware; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm, Friday, May 21, 2021 at Liberty Baptist Church, 410 Blessed Hope Road, York, SC, with Rev. Richard Pickering, Sr. officiating. Burial will follow at Langrum Branch Baptist Church Cemetery in York, SC.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 pm prior to the service and other times at 126 Charlotte Street, York, SC.
