Mr. Phillip Pendergrass, 80, passed away Monday, September 6, 2021 at Carolina Gardens of Rock Hill, SC. He was born April 16, 1941 in Sharon, SC, a son of the late Clarence and Maybell Thompson Pendergrass.
Funeral services will be 1:00 pm, graveside, on Sunday, September 12, 2021 at Mt. Hopewell Baptist Church in Sharon, SC with Rev. Frank L. Dickerson officiating. The Interment will immediately follow services.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 6:00 pm, Saturday, September 11, 2021 at the funeral home. ***MASKS WILL BE REQUIRED FOR THE FUNERAL HOME AND GRAVESIDE SERVICE. PLEASE BRING A CHAIR IF YOU CANNOT STAND LONGER THAN 10 MINUTES AT THE GRAVESIDE.***
Mr. Phillip Pendergrass, 80, was born in Sharon South Carolina on April 16, 1941, to Maybell Thompson Pendergrass and Clarence Pendergrass. Phillip went into eternal rest to be with the Lord on September 6, 2021 at Carolina Gardens Assistance Living Rock Hill, South Carolina.
Affectionally known as “Doc” he was baptized and became a member of Mount Hopewell Baptist Church in Sharon, South Carolina.
He attended Chester Public schools and graduated from Finely High School in 1963. After graduating, he moved to Plainfield New Jersey where he made his home. He worked for Ford Motor company as an assembly line man from 1968 until his retirement in 2006. While in New Jersey, he joined Community Baptist Church where he served as Trustee. After moving back home to the Thompson Quarters Community, he reunited with his home church Mount Hopewell Baptist Church, where he served on the Board of Trustees, the Usher’s Ministries, and the hymn choir. He also served on the Board of Trustees for the Cross Roads Fire Department, the Board of Trustees for the Blue Branch Church’s Annual Camp meeting, the Chester County’s Farmer’s Market and he was member of the United Auto Workers (UAW) in New Jersey.
He is preceded in death by his beloved parents and brothers James Bradley Pendergrass, Thurman Eugene Pendergrass, and two sisters and one brother who passed away at a very early age.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter, Jalilah (Gabriel) Martinez of Fort Mill, SC; three grand-children, Emanuel, Emma, and Emerson Martinez. Two brothers, Willie Craig Pendergrass, Sr. and Clarence Pendergrass Jr both of Sharon, SC. One Aunt, Lillian K Brown of Rock Hill, SC. One Sister-n-law, Christine Pendergrass of Gastonia, NC. Five nieces: Phyllis Anderson of Rock Hill, SC, Patricia Kornegay (Jessie) of Charlotte, NC, Vester Lee (Sissy) of Gastonia, NC, Sada Pendergrass of Chester, SC, Sandy Clark of South Plainfield, NJ. Four nephews: Willie Craig Pendergrass, Jr of Rock Hill, SC, Thurmond Pendergrass of Chester, SC, Ricky Pendergrass of Gastonia, NC, and Jonathan Clark of South Plainfield, NJ. One great nephew who was also his Godson, Justin Anderson of Charlotte, NC. As well as a host of other loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
