A beautiful centurian, Mrs. Peninnah Bowen Lowry, 102, of 44 Maiden Lane, York, SC gained her key to Eternal Life Thursday, February 20, 2020 surrounded by her loving family. Born March 19, 1917 in York (Eastview), SC, she was a daughter of the late Clarence Bowen, Sr. and Ella Davidson Bowen. Her husband of 52 years, Arthur Lowry, Sr., also preceded her in death.
She was educated in York County Schools, and served many years in the York School District as a cook at the former McCelvey Elementary School. Peninnah accepted Christ at an early age and joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church in McConnells, SC. After marriage, she became a member of Langrum Branch Baptist Church with her husband.
Mrs. Lowry was involved with numerous organizations in the church, including the Usher Ministry, Sunday School Teacher, Hymn Choir, Deaconess Ministry, Burial Aide Society, Vacation Bible School Director, and President of the Missionary Ministry. She was also a member of several other organizations including: Order of Eastern Star, White Hill # 350, Sandy River Baptist Association Upper Division, Women's Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina, and the Western York County Branch of the NAACP.
In addition to her parents and husband, she is also preceded in death by five brothers, Clarence Bowen, Jr., J.C. Bowen, James Bowen, Thomas Bowen, and William Bowen; five sisters, Bessie M. Gaston, Reola Wright, Ruth Lowry, Correan Bowen, and Ella Bowen; and one son, William O. Berry.
Left to cherish loving memories are two sons, Arthur Lowry, Jr. (Rubye) and Clarence Lowry; a daughter-in-law, Sitrena Berry; 11 granchildren, 5 of whom were reared in the home: Karen, Jerome, Darryl, Valerie and Angela; 21 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great granchildren; one sister-in-law, Myrtice Bowen; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 12:00 noon, Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at Langrum Branch Baptist Church in York, SC with Rev. Dr. Anthony Johnson officiating, and Rev. Richard Pickering, Sr. eulogizing. Burial will follow in the church cemtery.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 pm, Monday, February 24, 2020 at Langrum Branch. Eastern Star rites will be observed from 6:30 to 7:00 pm.
