Novis Walker Obituary

Mrs. Novis Jean Currence Walker, 87, of 2085 Greenleaf Road, Clover SC, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, July 29, 2022 at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, SC.  She was born April 20, 1935 to the late Walter Thomas Currence and Mattie Wright Currence.

The youngest daughter, she was taken to Columbia, SC by Mrs. Modjeska Simkins after passing the Dean’s Test.  With Mrs. Simkins, she was educated in Richland County Schools and was the only one of her siblings to graduate high school.  After high school, she entered cosmetology school in Columbia, SC. There, she met and married Martin Luther Starks, to which one child was born of their union.  After their marriage was dissolved, she met and married Sergeant Major Roosevelt Walker, an active US Army serviceman.  After Sgt. Walker’s retirement, the couple started their own business in Columbia.

After several years of entrepreneurship, they decided to move to Buffalo, New York. After a number of years there, Mr. Walker passed away, and Novis Jean then decided to move to Brooklyn, New York.  While in Brooklyn, she worked for the Bulova Watch Company for many years.  After receiving word of her parents’ declining health, she relocated back to Clover to take care of them.  While back in York County, she worked for Stablis for many years and retired there.  After retirement, she also provided home health care for people for a number of years.

Novis Jean was a true people person, who loved meeting people.  In fact, she met many new friends doing her two favorite hobbies—shopping and traveling.

Novis Jean was a dedicated member of St. James United Methodist Church in York, SC, where she served as a lay speaker, a choir member and a director of the children’s group. She was also a member of Wilson Chapter No. 207 Order of Eastern Star.

In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her siblings: Thomas, Wilford, Sam, Heyward, Crawford, Mason, Ozzie, Mildred, Odessa, O’Neal, Alberta, and Anell.

Surviving to cherish loving memories are her only son, Martin L. Starks, Jr. of the home; a sister, Dorothy Currence; a special niece and nephew, Annie C. White and Herb; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
