Mrs. Mary "Sally" Rainey, 86, of 4 Rosewood Lane, York, departed this life on Monday, April 3, 2023 at her home. Mrs. Rainey was born January 2, 1937 in York, SC, a daughter of the late Paul Shannon, Sr. and Beatrice Chambers Shannon.
Funeral services will be 1:00 pm, Saturday, April 8, 2023 at Wesley United Methodist Church in York, SC with Rev. Robert Shuler officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm, prior to the funeral. Burial will follow at Hopewell United Methodist Church Cemetery in York, SC. ***MASKS ARE REQUIRED FOR WESLEY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH***
Mrs. Rainey, better known as "Sally," was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church in York, SC, where she served on the Usher Board, Hopewell Shepherd Fold Lodge A.P. & B. #22, Hopewell Union Cooperative Charity #3, and Hopewell United Women of Faith. She was also a member of the Western York County NAACP.
Sally worked in housekeeping for many years at Divine Savior Hospital, and after it was converted to White Oak Manor Nursing Home, she worked there until she retired. Throughout the years, Sally loved cooking and baking for her family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her lifelong loving companion, John Woody; four brothers: David Shannon, James Shannon, George Shannon, and Paul Shannon, Jr.; two sons, Samuel Lee Matthews and Carl L. Matthews; and two grandchildren: Yomeika McCoy and Dontae` McKinley.
Sally leaves to cherish fond memories two daughters, Elizabeth McCoy (John A.) of Sharon, SC and Cynethia Rainey of the home; three sons, Johnny Matthews (Sherry) of Statesville, NC, David Matthews of Charlotte, NC and William Rainey (Katie) of Detroit, MI; one brother, Andrew Shannon of York, SC; fourteen grandchildren: Jermaine and Jarrod McCoy, Shyann Matthews, Angelie and David Matthews, Jr., Brittan, Keyon and Amber Rainey, Sonia Burris, Samoniea Norman, Samuel Matthews II, Robert, Aisiah and Yasmin McKinley; two special children whom she reared, Gregg and Lynn Adams; two special nieces, Kelly Shannon and Devery Shannon; a special sister-in-law, Cora Shannon; as well as a host of great grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
