Funeral services will be 1:00 pm, Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at Fishing Creek Baptist Church in York, SC with Rev. Reginald McClean officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeview Memory Gardens in York, SC.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 pm, Tuesday, September 3, 2024 at the funeral home.
Mary Ann Sherer Grier, of York, SC entered eternal rest on August 27, 2024, at her home. Mary was born August 14, 1940, to the late Walter Thomas, Sr. and Osia Mae Leach Sherer. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, William Arthur Sherer and Bobby Dean Sherer and her sisters, Nancy Jane Sherer Good, Julia Mae Sherer and Margaret Agnes Sherer.
Mary, affectionately known as “Mae” attended Jefferson High School in York, SC. She was passionate about raising kids, spending time with her family, cooking, watching “Family Feud”, and eating at Lizard Thicket. She loved her dog, Toby.
Mary was employed by Fieldcrest Cannon Mills, Cato’s and as a bus driver for York School District Number One for over 30 years before retiring in 2013. Driving the bus was the love of her life. Mary was an active member of Fishing Creek Baptist Church, where she drove the church van, served as director of the children and gospel choir, member of the usher board, and secretary of her Sunday school class.
Mary didn’t have any biological children but raised several as her own. She touched the hearts and lives of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed by all her family and friends.
Mary leaves to cherish her memories her adopted children: four daughters Shirleatha Nicole Sherer Vaughan, Shar’dayzhia Reid, Shauntia Means, Berche` Floyd and two adopted sons Julius Sherer and Jamie (Hazel) Sherer. Eleven adopted grandchildren, three of whom she reared in the home, Ny’Ashia Vaughan, Desmond Vaughan, and Zaire Chalk, and one adopted great grandson A’Zaiden Vaughan. Her brother Walter Thomas Sherer, Jr. (Patricia) of Clover, SC, two sisters Lula Bell Howell (John) of Hickory Grove, SC and Shirley Mae Sherer of York, SC and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.
