Martha Louise Isom Harris, Woman of Faith, beloved Great Great Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Grandmother, Mother, Sister and Friend, a “Champion of Christ,” was peacefully called home to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, July 14, 2024. Martha Louise Harris was born May 3, 1925, in Newport, SC to the late Hall Isom and Laura Gilmore Isom.

Louise planted her roots into the resilient southern soil and blossomed into a confident woman who journeyed to New York in the early 1950s in pursuit of her dream of becoming a nurse. Louise Harris, “Nanny” as she was affectionately called by her family, was a woman of Faith that embodied courage, strength and resilience. Louise was brought up to love the Lord through her parents’ spiritual guidance. Raised in a small church in Rock Hill, SC, Union Baptist Church, she was equipped with a spiritual foundation to lead her to embark on a fearless journey to New York, set out to explore a new world in a country riddled with inequality and great uncertainty.

After leaving South Carolina, Louise settled in White Plains, NY. There, Louise made a life for herself rooted in service to others. Louise brought her compassion, empathy and faith to work every day, addressing everyone she met with a friendly “Hello, God bless you,” or “Have a blessed day.” Louise was a woman when she spoke her words were always encouraging, uplifting and thoughtful. She enjoyed reading her Bible and discussing the Word of God every chance she got. She would say, “Read your Bible, and say your prayers” after every encounter we had with her.

Louise dedicated her life to serving the Lord and sharing his goodness with all who would listen. She served as a missionary of Christ at First Community Baptist Church in Greenburgh, NY for more than 50 years. There, she allowed her love for the Lord to guide her mentorship, impart wisdom, motivate and inspire people young and old to live righteously and love each other as God loves us. Louise embraced her role as a servant of Christ by living every day giving thanks for all the blessings and trials she experienced in her life. Today, her family grieves the loss of a phenomenal woman, whose life was an example of the thoughtfulness, encouragement, grace and love it takes to lead a family.
