Mrs. Lizzie Parks Thompson, 90, of 196 Brown Neal Rd, York, South Carolina, peacefully transitioned at home into eternal rest on Thursday, January 16, 2025. She was born on May 26, 1934, to the late Willie and Aggie Parks. Lizzie is now free from the burdens of this world and is resting in the loving arms of our Lord.
“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20:35
Lizzie, lovingly known as "Big Momma," truly believed that it is more blessed to give than to receive. Her generosity was limitless, and she exemplified selflessness and compassion. As a member of Mt. Dowell Baptist Church, she devoted her life to serving her family and community as a caring sister, mother, grandmother, and aunt. With a wonderful sense of humor and a big heart, her legacy of love and service will continue to inspire and uplift all who had the privilege of knowing her.
“I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13
In 1950, Lizzie married Marion Otis Latta, marking the start of a new chapter in her life in the vibrant city of Charlotte, North Carolina. With her unwavering perseverance and a shared vision for a brighter future, Lizzie held various positions throughout her career before retiring as a custodian from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System.
However, Lizzie's passion for helping others inspired her to embark on a remarkable second act. With an entrepreneurial spirit and a deep desire to make a meaningful difference, she founded Helping Hands, a home healthcare service that provided essential support to seniors, especially those living with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. For over a decade, she became a beloved presence in her clients’ lives, known for her exceptional ability to enhance their quality of life with compassion and dignity.
Her commitment to excellence and empathetic nature made her a true beacon of hope for families needing care. Lizzie’s legacy will forever be remembered in the hearts of those she touched with her kindness and unwavering commitment to service.
She was predeceased by her parents; her former husbands, Marion Otis Latta (1950–1978) and James Thompson (1992–2009); ten siblings; two sons, Charles Otis Latta Sr. and Eddie Marion Latta; her grandson, Johnny “Aaron” Barnette Jr., and her great-granddaughter, Lauryn Elyse Rainey.
She leaves behind a legacy filled with love and cherished memories for those who survive her: two sons, Gary (Betty Ann) Latta of Charlotte, NC, and Melvin Latta, also of Charlotte, NC; three daughters, Lucinda Latta of York, SC, Catherine Latta of York, SC, and Angela Latta of Charlotte, NC; one brother, Willie Parks of McConnells, SC; and twenty-one grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, one daughter-in-law, Chenna Latta, along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
A quiet hour will take place at noon, followed by a Celebration of Life at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 21, at Mt. Dowell Baptist Church, 4717 Chester Hwy, McConnells, SC. Rev. Charles Booker Jr. will officiate. Wright Funeral Home in York, SC, is in charge of the arrangements.
