Mr. Leo Porter, 84 of Gastonia, North Carolina transitioned Saturday November 14, 2020 at CaroMont Regional Medical Center. He was born on July 27, 1936 in Mayesville, South Carolina to the late Taylor and Jannie Washington Porter.
To some he was known as Dad, Papa Leo, Uncle Leo, Pops, Mr. Cool, Leo, and affectionately “Book” to his family. He was an amazing man who loved and enjoyed life to the fullest especially singing, reading and studying the word of God, watching sports-NBA, movies, quartet VHS tapes; discussing politics, spending time with his family including his little dog “Pickle”, working in the yard and walking on a daily basis. His infectious smile encouraged so many people in his job, community, and church. And that smile truly left a lasting impression of love and kindness to everyone he encountered.
He retired after 25 years from Charlotte Mecklenburg School System as a Ground Maintenance Crew Member. For 40 or more years he faithfully served at Liberty Hill AME Zion Church as a class leader, trustee, steward, a member of the Church Aid Society and a dedicated member of the men’s choir. In addition to that he loved and sang to the glory of God with the South Carolina Conference Rock Hill District- Men of Zion Choir. He was a member of various quartet groups and the Spiritual Highlights was the group that he absolutely loved.
Those left to cherish Mr. Leo’s many wonderful memories are his loving wife of 54 years, Clara C. Porter of Gastonia, North Carolina; brother, Albert Porter of Columbia, South Carolina; three daughters, Theresa Jackson of Sumter, South Carolina; Stella Jones (Harold) and Karen Burris (Calvin) of Gastonia, North Carolina and very special goddaughter, Valorie Brice. He also leaves 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; and a host of loving relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 1:30 pm, Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at Lakeview Memory Gardens in York, SC, with Rev. Ryan Godfrey officiating. Burial will follow immediately after.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 1:00 prior to the service at the funeral home.
