The Reverend John Lewis Mackins was born in York County on October 23, 1951 to John Lee and Alberta Oglesby Mackins. He transitioned to his heavenly abode on Good Friday, April 19, 2019 at his home with wife, son, grandson and sister-in-law by his side.
Reverend Mackins, lovingly called “Johnny,” received his education in York County Schools and continued his education at Clinton College in Rock Hill, South Carolina. He was employed by Ladd Construction, Bowling Green Spinning and was Self-employed, a man of many gifts and talents.Johnny was a former member of Mt. Carmel Holiness Church of God, and a member of Zoah AME Zion Church, serving for over twenty years and where he received and accepted the “Call” to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. He transferred to the Liberty Hill AME Zion Church Family in December of 2018 and was a blessing and support to the pastor and faith community. He was an important part of the ministry team, supporting the men’s ministry, church school and bible study. The zeal and joy that he demonstrated for the Christian Ministry was contagious, and his respect and regard for leadership is to be emulated. He was a praiser and always “Glad to be in the service, one more time!”
Johnny was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He had a passion for driving “Hot Rods”, and Shady Side Drag Race was the place, Thursday-Sunday! He loved working on houses, repairing things, there wasn’t anything that he couldn’t fix. Now, fishing was a great past time of his and Captain Steve’s and Long Creek Fish Camps were among his favorite places to eat fish. Johnny was a people person, he loved people and people loved him.
His parents and two brothers, Jimmy Stevenson and Dennis James Mackins, preceded him in death.
Reverend John Lewis Mackins leaves to cherish his loving memories his wife, Carrie Lee Mackins of the home; his children, Tamara Neely Miller (Chris) of Kings Mountain, NC, Marcus Neely (Lawan) of York, SC, Tonka Collins of Washington, DC, Gregory Mason and James Mason both of Gastonia, NC, Javier Mason of Rock Hill, SC, and Shera Mason of Charlotte, NC; adopted daughter, Jessica Collins of Washington, DC; eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; one aunt, Christine Oglesby; one uncle, Alonzo McMacklin (Ruth); special nephews: James Allison, Dennis Mackins, and Antonio Sadler; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
