Hazel grew up in York, South Carolina and attended Jefferson High School, graduating in 1969.  After high school, he worked at Huntley's, American Thread and the City of York.

Hazel was known for helping and encouraging others in the community.  He often transported people, especially seniors, back and forth to various destinations free of charge.  He encouraged others by sharing scriptures to uplift their spirits.

At an early age, he joined Galilee Baptist Church.  He was a member of the Sheperds Fold Lodge #22, AP and B Society. He was also a member of the Western York County NAACP.

Although he did not have biological children, he helped rear his nephews and nieces.  He showered them with love and gifts during birthdays and special holidays.  He was an avid sports fan and particularly loved the Washington Football Team (formerly the Redskins).

In addition to his parents, Hazel is preceded in death by two brothers, Willie Marion Burris and Robert Louis Burris; six sisters, Lillie Mae Fox, Mamie Odessa Hemphill, Elois Wilform-Malcolm, Frances Louise Black, Vestrula Morrison and Patricia Ann Burris; and one brother-in-law, Marshall Fox.

Morrison of Lancaster, SC, and Wesley J. Malcolm of Atlanta, GA; one sister-in-law, Lillie Gill Burris of York, SC; in addition to many treasured nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
