Services will be 2:00 pm, Thursday, September 5, 2024 at Wright Funeral Home with Dr. Cynthia McCullough officiating. Burial will follow at Uniondale Cemetery in York, SC.
A repast will follow services at Clinton Chapel AME Zion Church Fellowship Hall, 302 California Street, York, SC.
Harriett was the daughter of the late Mr. William T. Parker, Sr. and Mrs. Elizabeth Coln Parker. She was born October 18, 1937 in York, South Carolina. Harriett departed this life in the early hours of Friday, August 30, 2024 at Sumter East Rehabilitation Center, in Sumter, South Carolina.
Harriett grew up in York, South Carolina and was nurtured in the Christian atmosphere of Clinton Chapel AME Zion Church, where she became a member at an early age. She was active in church and community activities. Harriett was educated in the public schools of York, South Carolina and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1955. She then enrolled in South Carolina State College (now University), graduating in 1959 after earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. She was employed by the Richland County School District as a teacher at Crain Creek Elementary School. Harriett’s entire professional career of more than thirty years as a teacher was dedicated to Crain Creek Elementary School.
Harriett spent her adult life in Columbia, South Carolina. She joined Reid Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, where she served as a member of the church choir and Stewardess Board. Harriett was an active and devoted member of her church until her health declined.
In 1971, Harriett married Jessie James Stroy. In 1974, their union gifted them to be parents of Andre Darnel Stroy. Harriett and Jessie enjoyed senior exercise classes, day trips and outings with their affiliated senior group.
Preceding Harriett in death are her parents, Mr. William T. Parker, Sr. and Mrs. Elizabeth C. Parker; her brothers, James Otis Parker and William T. Parker, Jr.; her husband of fifty years, Jessie James Stroy; and her son, Andre D. Stroy.
Surviving to cherish precious memories of Harriett are one aunt, Mrs. Josie C. Guthrie; her grandson, Andreas J. Stroy; one great-grandson, Cayden De’Andre Story; a sister, Margaret Parker McCoy; a brother, Robert H. Parker; two sisters-in-law, Lois M. Parker and Shirley H. Parker; her nieces: Tammy Parker, Roma Parker Leach, Sheila Walker, Kimberly Parker Reese, Dena Hubert, and Courtney H. Carter; her nephews, Victor Parker, Robert A. Parker, and Randal McCoy; as well as a host of cousins, and many family members and friends who will celebrate fond memories of Harriett.
