Mr. Gregory Douglas Currence, born February 14, 1947, in Baltimore, Maryland, passed away at his home in Gastonia, North Carolina.
Gregory spent his early years in Brooklyn, New York, before his family returned to Clover, South Carolina. After graduating from high school, he proudly served in the U.S. Army, completing his tour in 1970. He went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from South Carolina State University and later received his MBA from the University of Minnesota while working as an auditor for Arthur Andersen.
Gregory’s career in finance and accounting took him to Atlanta before he returned to the Carolinas, settling first in York County and later in Gastonia, North Carolina.
Gregory is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Gregor and Princess Currence; his grandchild, G. Mickey Currence; his former wife, Caroline Currence; his sister, Beverly Butler, and three nephews; one niece; six great-nieces and nephews; and a host of extended family and friends. He is preceded in death by his brother, Hayward Currence, Jr, his parents, Mamie and Hayward Currence Sr., and his sister, Audrey Currence.
He will be remembered for his hard work and dedication to his professional achievements, as well as his quiet resilience throughout his life.
Memorial services will be 1:30 pm, Sunday, June 29, 2025 at St. James United Methodist Church in York, SC with Rev. Dr. Thomas Bowman, Sr. officiating. Military Honors will be observed promptly at 1:30 p.m. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 pm prior to the service.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
