Elder Granita LaVon McClure Boyd, 62, of 406 Carver Street, Clover, SC, transitioned to her Heavenly Home on Thursday, January 14, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. The daughter of Barbara M. Connor and James Wise, Jr., she was born September 2, 1958 in York County, South Carolina.
Up to the age of eight years old, Granita (Nita) was raised in Clover, SC by her maternal grandmother, Rev. Mary Elizabeth Walker. Her grandmother was an ordained pastor, preacher, and humble Christian, who used her spiritual gifts to the glory of God. Granita had the privilege to literally walk in her grandmother's shadows each time they walked to church together and often spoke of how those experiences "were like gold."
Granita received her education in Clover School District and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1976. In 1980, she received her Bachelor's degree in Counseling Education from S.C. State University in Orangeburg, SC. She later received her Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC (1988), obtained her Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) certification (1990), received a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) degree from Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, NC (2017), and was employed in the mental health field for over 30 years. She also served her community diligently. In 1996, she founded the Roosevelt Community Watch, Inc., served as councilwoman for the Town of Clover from 2005-2015, and was also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Rock Hill Alumnae Chapter.
In 2000, Granita was licensed to preach the gospel and in 2006, she was ordained as an elder at Friendship Christian Church in Gastonia, NC. She was truly a faithful servant who was dedicated to serving God by serving His people.
In addition to her grandmother, Rev. Mary Elizabeth Walker, and parents, Barbara M. Connor and James Wise, Jr., two uncles, James E. Walker and Ernest Calvin Walker preceded her in death.
Surviving to cherish loving memories are her high school sweetheart and husband of 39 years, Vernie L. Boyd; two daughters, Shonte` B. Jackson (Donte`) and Kacey B. Douglas (LaQuavius) both of Gastonia, NC; one sister, Kathy McClure George (Kola) of Lancaster, SC; one brother, Joseph Earl Connor (Molita) of Laurel, MD; four grandchildren: Laila and Luke Jackson, NyAsia Boyd, and Kyleigh Douglas; special friends, Gwen and Sonny Smith; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
The family will only receive friends from 5 to 6 pm, on Tuesday, January 19th at the funeral home, though Mrs. Boyd may be viewed from 5 to 7 pm.
Graveside services will be 1 pm, Wednesday, January 20th at Lakeview Memory Gardens in York, SC, with Bishop John McCullough officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service. Please bring a chair if you are unable to stand for longer than 15 minutes.
