Gilbert McNeill, Sr. Obituary

Gilbert McNeill, Sr., 77, of Charlotte, NC, departed this earthly life Monday, September 23, 2019 at Atrium Health-Pineville, after a short illness.  He was born April 28, 1942 in Laurinburg, NC to the late Maggie Ellerbee McNeill Reindel and Oscar McNeill.

Gilbert was a graduate of Morristown High School in Morristown, NJ, where he grew up.  He was a high school football and track standout.  He attended North West College in Powell, Wyoming on a football scholarship.  He left college after two years and joined the Army.  He served in the 1st Infantry Division-The Big Red One, where he did a tour of duty in Vietnam.  After leaving the Army, he was employed by Hewlett-Packard and Wurth Industries in New Jersey.  Gilbert later relocated to North Carolina, where he worked for Walmart, Inc., retiring five years ago with over 20 years of service.

He will be remembered by his family as a history buff and sports fanatic, especially football.  He was an amateur photographer and loved all types of music.  He spent hours downloading music, which he burned to CDs/DVDs and gave away as gifts.

Preceding him in death in addition to his parents and his stepfather, Mr. Albert Reindel,  were two sisters, Aletha Patterson and Peggy Lucas; and five brothers, Edward Ivey, Fred Peterkin, Jimmy (Melvin) Peterkin, James McNeill, and Ronald McNeill.

He leaves to cherish fond memories his wife of 52 years, Patricia Byers-McNeill; his only son, Gilbert McNeill, Jr.; and a whole host of loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews; and a special cousin who is like a son, Tony Bethea. Gilbert will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him, including his special classmates.
