Mr. George William McKnight, age 88, of 3484 Hoodtown Road, Sharon, SC, peacefully went to be with our Lord on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at his home. He was born June 27, 1936, in Sharon, SC, to the late Jessie and Lillie Mae Brown McKnight.

George was a faithful member of Wilson Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, where he served as a class leader, Lay Council life member, and hymn choir member. George was also an AP&B Society member.

George attended school in Sharon, SC. He and his brother, Ernest, started a logging business, McKnight Brothers Logging, that allowed him to provide for his family and grandchildren. Through hard work, determination, and perseverance, this business lasted over 60 years. George would work long hard hours, literally from dawn to dusk. The two brothers shared a bond so close, that you would think they were fraternal twins. While Ernest was the quiet one, George, on the other hand was talkative. He was quick to share a story about the good old days. He also had a sharp memory of family history that he loved sharing with others.

George was a farmer who raised all kinds of crops, potatoes, tomatoes, greens, corn, sugar cane, watermelons etc. You name it, and George had it! He also raised hogs, which not only fed his family, but his siblings and their families. George loved listening to music in his spare time. Not known to many, George played the guitar. The “The Staple Singers” was his favorite group. He was especially fond of Mavis Staples! He could listen to her sing for hours. He would also ask family members to turn on that “Delois McKnight” music because he struggled with new technology after he wore out his old CD player. George also loved going around to visit people, talk, and grab a bite to eat here and there. He was especially fond of Ms. Josephine’s egg custard! He always was willing to lend a helping hand and assist others in need.

Some of George’s mornings consisted of phone calls from his great-niece “Malika”. He looked forward to their morning conversations, prayers, and laughs. They would also ride around and go sightseeing when she came down South to visit and take him shopping. His days ended with his great-grandson, Kole, reading Biblical scriptures to him.

George could count on a good meal from the “Neighborhood Grill”. This is not to be confused with the Sharon Grill. Chef Gregboy and Grill Master Paul Feemster would cater delicious hot sizzling fried fish, frog legs, chicken, etc.  Samuel “June” Easter Jr. would always keep George’s yard nice and tidy. He enjoyed his weekly visits from his niece Pinkey Thompson, who stopped by faithfully when he stopped driving. He would always remind her that he asked his sister if he could name her Pinkey. George’s nephew, Eric Bryant, kept him supplied with many dapper clothes and shoes.

George had a special bond with his nieces and nephews. He would drive to see them on a regular basis. Although he may not have felt well, he would muster up the strength to visit others. He believed in checking on others and did so faithfully. It was his way of saying that they were strongly on his mind and to show his LOVE.

In addition to his parents, George is preceded in death by his two sons, Michael McKnight and Larry McKnight; four brothers: Sammie McKnight, Claude McKnight, Ernest McKnight, and Johnny McKnight; and five sisters: Jessie Lee McKnight, Eliza Ann Easter, Lucille Bennett, Daisy Burris, and Carrie Mae Wade.
