Frances Meeks Obituary

Mrs. Frances Lowry Meeks, 89, of 501 California Circle, York, SC departed this earthly life on Monday, September 30, 2019 at her home.  Born March 21, 1930 in York, she was a daughter of the late Henry B. and Estelle Davis Lowry. She was the widow of James Otis Meeks, Sr.

Funeral services will be 1:00 pm, Friday, October 4, 2019 at Gold Hill Baptist Church in York, SC with Rev. George A. McCoy, Sr. officiating and Rev. Dr. Anthony Johnson eulogizing.  Burial will follow at Lakeview Memory Gardens in York, SC.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:00 p.m. prior to the service.

One of 10 children, she ended her education in the eighth grade to begin working in the cotton fields to help support her family. She married James Otis Meeks, Sr. on February 14, 1947, and they had nine beautiful children. She worked for several other employers and in the textile industry, but her most cherished job was that of wife, mother and homemaker.

She could cook like "nobody's business" and loved to host weekly Sunday dinners at her home for family and friends, and for anyone who wanted a good, warm meal. She enjoyed picking poke salad, exercising to beat of her own drum, and hosting the government summer lunch program in her back yard for children in the neighborhood. In her later years, when she was no longer able to leave her house as much as she would have liked, she welcomed everyone to her home to visit. Although Alzheimer's disease robbed her of her memory, glimpses of her feisty, yet loving, personality would still shine through. She was tough as nails and would "tell it like it was", but she was also very kind and loving, and would give you her very last. She was an amazing woman, and she cared for her precious Kim for many, many years until she was no longer physically and mentally able. She was a member of Gold Hill Baptist Church, and she enjoyed listening to Jimmy Swaggart, John Hagee, and country music.

Frances is survived by six children: Linda Meeks Chisholm (Sammie Chisholm), James Otis Meeks, Jr. (Telicia Meeks),  Sandra K. Meeks,  Monte L. Meeks, Kimely V. Meeks, and Carletta Meeks; two grandchildren, whom she raised, Ynona S. Ellis, and Denika M. Blanco (Jhonny Blanco-Fabian); one brother, Mason Lowry; one sister, Barbara Jean Benjamin, and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by her husband, James Otis Meeks, Sr.; three sons: Jerry L. Meeks, Stanley V. Meeks  and Melvin Meeks; one grandchild, Jakobe Meeks; one great-grandchild, T'Asia Meeks; and nine siblings.

Frances was the rock of her family, and she will be cherished with loving memories and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Rest in Heaven, sweet angel. You are free now.
