Mrs. Ellie Vee (Easter) Watson, 99, of 110 Watson Street, Clover, SC, departed this life on the 99th anniversary of her birth, January 15, 2021 at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, SC. She was born January 15, 1922 in Clover, South Carolina, a daughter of the late Ellie and Minnie Bertha (McCoy) Easter. She was the oldest of five children, and her parents and siblings lovingly called her "E'Vee."
Ellie Vee grew up in the church where her parents took her every Sunday. She proclaimed God as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She attended Clover Chapel Methodist Church A.M.E. (now United Methodist) and worked and learned God's teachings. She lived a Christian life.
Ellie Vee worked faithfully in her church. She was a Communion Steward and a member of the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, White Hill Chapter No. 350 for 76 years. Later in life, after her children were older, she and her oldest son, "Sonny," answered the Lord's calling and studied together to become certified Lay Speakers. She spoke many times in her home church and other churches invited her to speak as well.
Ellie Vee graduated from McKnight Colored School in 1937. Soon after, she met and married Andrew Lytle Watson. Theirs was a trule love story. "One Sunday, she was going back home from Sunday School, Lytle was sitting in front of Black's Cafe (now Jackson's Laundromat) on his way back to Newberry, SC, where he was stationed in the C. C. Camp Army Reserves. He came across to the side of the road she was on and walked a piece with her toward home. From then on, every week he came home on furlough he would come to see her. He had a Ford Coupe, black four-door car. From 1937 'til 1939 they courted."
In August of 1939 they were married. From this union they had eight children. Sadly, her first born, a girl, was still-born, and later twin boys died shortly after birth. She was a loving and caring mother. She brought up her children in the church and taught them early the word of God. She instilled in her children to love one another. She always taught them to be the best at whatever they should do. She made a loving home for them to grow up in, and there were many family gatherings and reunions where all the family would come together and tell family stories. Ellie Vee was the family historian, and she could tell all about the family on both sides many generations back. She inherited her father's 'sweet tooth,' and would always say, "Save room for dessert, eat it first."
Ellie Vee had a love for cats. She and her two sons, Felix and Sonny, cared for stray cats 'til this day. She also had a sense of humor. She said that if she would do something that was against the law, the police would get Margie because we look so much alike. When Mary, her eldest, would challenge her regarding the kitchen, she would say, "She's just like her Daddy." She and Mo'Easter would spend all day to was and dry Dorothy's hair because it was long and thick. She also had a special relationship with her son-in-law, George. They discussed the Bible and she shared family secrets with him. Her daughter-in-law, Dianne, cared lovingly for her, just like her own mother. Her lovign niece, Lela, made sure she was well cared for as well.
Her husband, Andrew L. Watson, parents, Ellie Hugh and Minnie Bertha Easter, and siblings: Annie Lee Easter, Ruby Easter-Brown, Ophelia Easter-Alexander, and Bobby Easter, all preceded her in death. She was their caregiver as they declined in life.
E'Vee to everyone who knows and loves her, leaves to rejoice and cherish her memory: three daughters, Mary Elma (Watson) Jones, Dorothy Watson and Margie (Watson) Canida (George) of Pikesville, Maryland; two sons, Andrew Lytle Watson, Jr. (Dianne) and Felix Watson, of Clover, SC. She has loving grandchildren who will miss her greatly, and great-grandchildren who will keep her loving, caring and giving spirit alive. She has a host of nephews and nieces, cousins and friends that are a blessing her. Ellie Vee belied that "what the world needs now is love," and we will always love her!
