Derrick Beard

Mr. Derrick Beard, of 733 East Main Street, Rock Hill, SC was born January 01, 1952 in York County, SC to the late Waddell Beard, Jr. and Mamie Beard Drake. He was reared by his great aunt, the late Mamie Williams.

Derrick was educated in York County Schools and later joined the United States National Guard in 1974, where he served for 17 years.  He worked for Meritor (formerly Rockwell Industries) for 29 years.

Derrick, affectionately known as “Blue” because of the blue Impala he drove in his earlier years, had a true passion for cars. Known by several other names depending on which of his many friends were calling, Bulldog, DB, Horse, or Big D, he showed true love for his friends. He was a loyal Dallas Cowboys fan, loved playing cards and snapping photos. He also had a love for traveling, especially cruises. Derrick always kept in contact with his family and friends; hence his favorite greeting, “what’s up witcha.” Well known in the community, his presence will surely be missed.

On Tuesday, October 27, 2020, Derrick departed this life to be with his Lord and Savior. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Donjinina ‘Nina’ Orr; his son, John Singleton, Jr.; his great-granddaughter, India Martin; his uncle, Halbrook McCaw; special cousin, Jo Renee Hampton; and brothers-in-law, George Orr and Willie Burris.

He leaves to cherish loving memories his wife, Brenda S. Beard of the home; his daughter, Keiwanna T. Beard of McConnells, SC; sons, Mareko Singleton (Ayunah) and Darryl Singleton both of Rock Hill, SC; His siblings, Donald Drake (Lillie) and Robin Stokes (Richard) both of Detroit, MI; His grandchildren whom he helped to rear: Kah’niya Brown of McConnells, SC, Asia Martin and Markisk Martin both of Rock Hill, SC, as well as a host of other grandchildren; His special cousins: Valerie Gill (William) of Parker, CO, Carolyn West Brown (J.B.) of Gastonia, NC, Tanya McCaw of Charlotte, NC, and Leslie Faye Shell of Middletown, CT; Brothers-in-law, John Orr (Deloris), James Orr, Andre Orr, Michael Orr, and George Burris all of McConnells, SC, Willie and Nathaniel Adams both of Rock Hill, SC; David Adams of Baltimore, MD, Tommie Walls of Charlotte, NC, and a special brother-in-law, Dennis Orr (Anna) of McConnells, SC; Sisters-in-law, Bobbie Orr and Annie Orr both of McConnells, SC, Brenda Adams of York, SC, Cecelia Adams of Charlotte, NC and Pearline Long of Rock Hill, SC. He was also loved by a host of other cousins, relatives and friends.
