Corey Patton, Jr. Obituary

Corey Deverond Patton, Jr., was born on Saturday, May 25, 1996 to Corey and Alexis (Gathers) Patton in Fort Bragg, NC. Corey departed from his earthly home to gain his heavenly wings on Saturday, February 29, 2020.

As a child, Corey attended Oakdale Elementary and later graduated high school from North Mecklenburg. While attending high school, Corey followed in his father’s footsteps with football. He felt challenged to best his father in football--which he did successfully. Once he accomplished that goal, he decided to try his hand at Rugby. He received numerous awards from both North Mecklenburg and West Mecklenburg High School for Rugby. This set forth a new passion and inspired Corey to pursue Rugby full time.  Following his dream, he attended Life University in Atlanta, where he had the opportunity to play Rugby professionally.

While playing for the Rhinos, he was selected to play with Bombala Rugby League in Australia.  Mastering his craft, he received the Rookie of Year and Most Tries while in Australia in 2019.

Through it all, Corey always remained faithful to God honoring Him, knowing that it was God who had His hand on his life.  Corey shared his faith and knowledge of Rugby by mentoring young athletes.  Corey was also a dedicated member of Second Calvary Baptist Church. He additionally shared a love for Calvary Hill Church of Greater Deliverance, which he attended occasionally.   He was an active member of the choir and step team.

Corey’s motto is “Fly High," which he did while on earth.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Virginia Patton, and Vermelle and Benjamin Gathers.

Those left to cherish his memories are: his loving and devoted parents, Corey, Sr. and Alexis Patton, and two brothers, Caleb and Benjamin Patton all of the hom; two aunts, Bonita Patton of Charlottesville, VA and  Jonelle Buie (Reginald) of Winston Salem, NC; four uncles: Jonathan Patton of Altanta, GA, Eugene Patton (Tammy) of Clayton, NC, Max Gathers (Monique) and Benjamin Gathers (Debra)  both of Charleston, SC; special acknowledgment to his grandparents Luerever Pridgen Judd of Raleigh, NC and William Judd of  Raleigh, NC; a host of special brothers and sisters, cousins and friends, and the Rugby World.
