Charlie Edward Good

May 5, 1940 ~ July 4, 2023 (age 83) 83 Years Old

Obituary

Mr. Charlie Edward Good, 83, of 11764 Smithford Road, Hickory Grove, SC passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born May 5, 1940 in Hickory Grove, he was a son of the late Rev. William Eddie Good and Luenella Bankhead Good.

After graduating high school, Charlie went to work for Celanese in Rock Hill. He was called to join the United States Army, and from 1964 to 1966 he served a tour in Korea. When he returned from his Korean Tour, he also returned to Celanese Corporation where he remained for 39 years until he retired.  Active in his community as well, Charlie was a member of Carolina Community Action, and a volunteer fireman for the Hickory Grove Fire Department, from which he retired a second time after many years of stirring their famous “HASH.”

Charlie loved life. He loved his wife of 57 years, Ruby Mae Dye Good. He loved his daughter, Charlene, and grandchildren. And he loved playing baseball. Charlie was a hard worker, and he often helped others—whether he was paid for his help or not, no task was too great or small. He would give his time any day of the week, even Sundays, with his wife often receiving the call: “Ruby Mae, we need Charlie to come help.”

Charlie also loved learning. He returned to school, earning two Associate Degrees from York Technical College in Electrical Systems and Heating and Air (HVAC) Systems. Even at age 70, he was on the Dean’s List.

Charlie was a man who loved his church, Mt. Zion AME Zion Church in Hickory Grove, SC. He faithfully attended Bible Study, and graduated from the District’s Bible Academy. He served as a Sunday School Superintendent, janitor, member of the Steward Board, Lay Council President, Hymn Choir member, Treasurer and member for the Fifth Sunday Singing Convention, delegate to the Annual Conference, 1st Vice President for the Chester District Lay Council, and member of the Christian Education Department.  He was an all-around man of the church.  He would leave early to get to church on time, and you could always count on him being there. If he wasn’t seen at church, questions about his whereabouts would be asked!

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, John David Good and Timothy Arnold Good; three sons lost prematurely; and a brother-in-law, Lonnie Dawkins.

He leaves to cherish his legacy his wife of 57 years, Ruby Dye Good of the home; a daughter, Charlene Cathcart (Tyrone) of Lake Wylie, SC; a son, Charles Patrick Smith of Gastonia, NC; grandchildren, Kayla and Tyler Cathcart, Charles Smith (Doreen), Dwan Smith (Stephanie), Tracy Constable (Lloyd); ten great-grandchildren ; three sisters, Sara Belle McKnight of Sharon, SC, Eva Mae Byrd of Hickory Grove, SC, and Clara Caldwell (Alvin Leroy) of Shelby, NC; six brothers, Walter Lee Good (Teshine) of Marietta, GA, Clayburn Good (Kathy) of Hickory Grove, SC, Robert Eugene Good (Carrie) and William Carl Good both of Charlotte, NC, Harry James Good (Priscilla) of Hickory Grove, SC, and Lester Alexander Good (Carrie) of Blythewood, SC; sisters-in-law, Mary Dye of Stamford, CT, Shirley Dawkins of Spartanburg, SC; Rev. Jean Currence (Ulysses) of Hickory Grove, SC, and Geraldine Dye of Spartanburg, SC; a brother-in-law, William Otis Dye of Gastonia, NC; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Funeral services will be 2:30 pm, Sunday, July 9, 2023 at Mt. Zion AME Zion Church in Hickory Grove, with Elder Otha L. Smith officiating and Rev. Frankie Smith eulogizing. Burial with Military Honors will follow in the church cemetery.
