Mr. Charles Benny Bowen, 72, formerly of York SC, passed away in Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. Born April 24, 1947 in Washington, DC, he was a son of the late Adeline Bowen Oates.
Benny, as he was affectionately called, was a high school basketball star and a graduate of Jefferson High School Class of 1965. After high school, he entered the United States Army in 1966, and served two years in the Vietnam War. He joined Mount Zion Baptist Church in McConnells, SC at an early age, and was a member until he returned to Washington, DC.
Left to cherish fond memories are his daughter, Mia Means Pendergrass of York, SC; brother, Jerry Oates of Columbia, SC; two granddaughters, Shauntia Means and Jaquesha Means; four great-grandchildren, De'Ontre Orr, Jakhia Means, Terriah Hubert, and Da'Niyah Crocker; two close cousins who were raised as siblings, Sandra C. Kirksey of Raleigh, NC, and Michael Currence of Charlotte, NC; as well as a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 1:00 pm, Saturday, May 11, 2019 at Wright Funeral Home in York, SC, with Rev. Dr. Anthony Johnson officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia, SC on Monday, May 13, 2019 at 1:00 pm.
