Bessie Crawford Hale, 76, of 403 South Congress Street, York, transitioned from this life on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, SC. She was born November 1942 in Rock Hill, to the late Mitt A. Crawford and Elizabeth Thompson.
Bessie attended elementary and high school in York, graduating from Jefferson High School in 1960. She attended Clark College in Atlanta, Georgia and received a B.S. in English Literature. She continued her education at Atlanta University and was awarded a Masters Degree in English Literature. Upon graduation, she first briefly taught at Spelman College and Alabama State University. Later, she taught high school students for the Communities and Schools Organization in Atlanta, Georgia. For many years she tutored elementary and high school students in the York community.
She is preceded in death by her loving grandmother, Mrs. Mamie Crawford; parents, Elizabeth Thompson and Mitt A. Crawford; and two brothers, Larry and Michael Crawford.
Bessie will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Heather Lynn Johnson of Birmingham, Alabama; her sisters Sarah Lee Mobley of Charlotte, NC, Bennie Hickey (John) of Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., Mamie “Bunny” Wells (Dennis), Elaine Brown, and Peggy Smith (Harold) all of McConnells, SC, Vera Crawford-Bey, Jorita Crawford, and Karen Massaley (Abraham) all of Washington, DC, Kimily Crawford of York, SC, and Mamie Charlene Blake (Terry) of Rock Hill, SC; brothers Harley Crawford of Fort Mill, SC, Kimmy Crawford (Annie) and David Crawford (Levette) both of Washington, DC. Bessie will be forever remembered by her numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, extended family and dear friends.
Funeral services will be 1:00 pm, Monday, June 24, 2019 at Galilee Baptist Church in York, SC with Rev. Charles Ashley, Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm prior to the service.
