Barbara Whistine Obituary

Mrs. Barbara Ann Whistine, 65, of 1289 Tom Joye Road, Clover, SC, transitioned to her Heavenly Home on Sunday, January 31, 2021 at MUSC Health Lancaster Medical Center, Lancaster, South Carolina. The daughter of the late Joshua Wilson Gill and Willie Mae Whitesides, she was born on February 25, 1955 in York County, South Carolina.

Funeral services will be graveside, Saturday, February 6, 2021 at 1:00 pm, at Lakeview Memory Gardens in York, SC, with Rev. Kenneth Bell eulogizing. Burial will immediately follow the service. ** Please bring a chair if you cannot stand longer than 10 minutes. **

The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 pm, Friday, February 5th at the funeral home. All COVID protocols will be observed. Please wear your masks and sanitize your hands.

Barbara graduated from Hickory Grove High School in 1973. She received her medical office certificate from York Technical College in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Barbara loved her church and church family. She was a faithful member of Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in Smyrna, South Carolina. She was a member of the Pastor Aide committee, Kitchen Committee, Missionary Women of Wisdom, and the church choir. She formerly serviced as Church Clerk, Church Secretary, and Assistant Program Coordinator.

Barbara worked for many years at Klear Knit, Inc. as a presser, and North Central Family Medical Center as the WIC Administrator until her health declined.

Barbara was a phenomenal, loving, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was the matriarch of her family. She loved making people happy and had a pure  heart of gold.

She never met a stranger. Barbara loved talking on the phone and led a prayer line with her granddaughter, Trinitee.

She poured her heart out to others. She would call her friends and family providing birthday shoutouts every year. Barbara had a warm, loving contagious spirit, and a smile that would light up a room.

Barbara had passion for cooking. At an early age, she learned her cooking skills from her grandmother, Ethel McGill.

Barbara was a true warrior of God. She loved the Lord and praised him daily. She loved expressing the goodness of the Lord and His holy word to others as encouragement.

Barbara was well loved by many and affectionately known as “Momma B” and “Queen B.”

In addition to her parents, Barbara is preceded in death by her grandmother, Ethel McGill; aunts, Mattie Robinson and Josephine Oates; uncles, George McGill and Claude McGill; brother-in-law, Leonard Adams; son-in-law, Mark Mitchem; a cousin reared as a brother, Leroy Grier; and a nephew, London “Monte” Adams.

Surviving to cherish fond memories are her loving husband of 43 years, Otis Whistine; two daughters, Anitra La’Shawn Mitchem and Miranda Whistine Rainer (Steven); one son, Otis Antoine Whistine; one brother, Joe Frank Whitesides; an aunt, Cora Lee McGill; sister-in-law and best friend, Gladys Faye Adams; brother-in-law, Dennis Whistine; six grandchildren: Markia Mitchem, Bre’Asia Mitchem, Sidney Whistine, Trey Swann, Trinitee Swann, and Austin Whistine; a special niece whom she considered a daughter, Lisa Adams Thomasson (Anthony); and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
