Mr. Rodney Marcel Gill, 47, of 202 Bishop Street, York, SC transitioned from this life on March 25, 2024, just shy of his 48th birthday at Atrium Pineville in Charlotte, NC.  Born March 27, 1976 in York, he was a son of Charles Lee Neely and the late Joann (Punkin) Gill.

Rodney was an honor graduate of York Comprehensive High School, later attending Benedict College as a music major.  Rodney was sure he was the smartest person in the room and didn’t hesitate to let you know it! During high school, he played the trombone in the band and was also a member of the Chorus.

Before his disability prevented him, he was a hard worker—working at Hardee’s Restaurant during college, then as a machine operator for Black & Decker and King’s Manufacturing on his return to York.

Rodney was a man of strong faith. He was baptized at an early age in Fishing Creek Baptist Church, where he attended for many years. Later in adulthood, he began attending the Seventh Day Adventist Fellowship Church. Despite his health difficulties, he never wavered in his faith from God. He would often help his community by cooking for different families, especially those who could not go out for themselves, and offer shelter to those in need. Pain or not, Rodney would often get up and fix a full course meal for him and others to share.

Preceding him death are his beloved mother, Joann Gill; grandparents, Pearline Gill, Louis Daniel Gill, and Mozel Neely; and his aunt, Margaret Neely.

Surviving to cherish loving memories are his father, Charles Lee Neely (Vanessa) his siblings: Charles Gill, Tamara Worthy, Fredrick Gill, Shayla Renwrick (Dwayne), Rev. Javan Leach, Paul Gill, Terrence Gill, Marcus Neely, and Cieleta Neely; two special nephews raised as sons, Jalen Gill and Kameron Gill; his grandmother, Sarah Neely; and his four godchildren. Even though Rodney didn’t have biological children, he recognized his host of beloved nieces and nephews as his children as well.
