Mr. Larry Donald Tate, known to his family and friends as Don, Uncle Don or Pretty Boy, entered into eternal rest on Friday, February 16, 2024, at his home in Winston-Salem, NC. He was born August 21, 1951 to the union of Magdelene Tate Gaither and the late, James Gaither, Sr.
He never met a stranger and was full of love, to know him was to love him. He had a great sense of humor and was known to give his friends funny nicknames. He enjoyed football, and the Kansas City Chiefs was his favorite team. He possessed many gifts and talents. He enjoyed cooking, playing the guitar and piano, cutting hair, and worked for many years as an auto mechanic. He was called on by many, and without hesitation he would help others, often at his own expense. No matter what he may have been going through he always managed to tell a joke or two, to make you laugh.
Mr. Tate attended Paisley High School, as well as Reid High School in Charlotte, NC. He spent most of his life in Charlotte with his grandmother, the late Luvate Tate, who primarily raised him. They shared a special bond and loved each other dearly. Don held several jobs in Mecklenburg and Gaston County. He also played lead guitar for The Voices of Faith and The Gospel Jewels, two local gospel groups.
He decided to relocate to Winston-Salem, NC after the passing of his grandmother, where he continued to work and share his good deeds to help those in need. He went on to join and be baptized at United Progressive Church.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Gaither, Sr. and brother, James Gaither, Jr.
He leaves to cherish his memories his mother, Magdelene Gaither; one brother, Karl Gaither of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Dorothy (Jesse) Mitchell of Charlotte, NC, Shirley Gaither and Queen Gaither both of Winston-Salem, NC; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and two best friends over the years, Terry Neely and Robert Mitchell.
Funeral services will be 1:30 pm, Saturday, February 24, 2024 at New Home AME Zion Church Cemetery, 3080 Charlotte Highway, York, SC. Mr. Tate may be viewed from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm prior to the service at Wright Funeral Home.
