He joined Ebenezer AME Zion church at an early age and served on the Trustee Board, Steward Board, Usher Board and Choir.  Halbrook was honored numerous times for his service, earning many plaques and certificates.  He was the lead Trustee in the rebuilding of Ebenezer when it was set afire and destroyed.  He was a faithful servant until his health declined.

Halbrook was a veteran of the US Army, serving during 1944-45, and socially, he was a life member of the Prince Hall Free and Accepted Masons with Mountain View Lodge #301 in Blacksburg, SC.

He worked at several construction jobs in his earlier years of employment.  One of his most memorable jobs was the construction of the Charlotte Coliseum (currently known as Bojangle's Coliseum).  Halbrook retired from the Dow Chemical Company, formerly known as Union Carbide, in Charlotte, NC after 30 years.

Let us not forget he was a farmer at heart and would farm before and after work.  He loved farming and spent much of his life fulfilling his passion for it.  At one time, he grew sugar cane and made molasses from his crop.

On Friday, February 8, 2019, Halbrook (affectionately known as "Mr. Halbrook") transitioned to be with the Lord.  Halbrook is preceded in death by his brother, Waddell Beard, Jr., his son, Tommy McCoy, his daughter, Jo Renee McCaw Hampton, and granddaughter, Hollie Hampton Setzer.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife of 66 years, Anna Jones McCaw.  He has two daughters, Valerie McCaw Gill (William) of Parker, CO, and Tanya McCaw of Charlotte, NC.  He has five grandchildren, Kevin Clyburn, Sr. (Sha-Ni) of York, SC, Juanna Thomas (Jabari) of Forest Park, GA, Byron Hampton of Smyrna, SC, Niki Gill Adams (Justin) and Marqui Gill both of Colorado.  He also leaves behind nine great-grandchildren, S'Kayia Hampton, Zahria Thomas and McKenzie Thomas all of Forest Park, GA, Mahoganey Setzer and Lauren Wright both of Clover, SC, Julian and Jeremiah Gill of Parker, CO, Cornelious "CJ" Addison and Kevin "KJ" Clyburn, Jr., both of Gastonia, NC.  He has one nephew, Derrick Beard (Brenda) of Rock Hill, SC, one great-niece, Keiwanna Beard of McConnells, SC, one first cousin, Venobie Whitworth of Gastonia, NC and one sister-in-law, Naomi Jones of Rock Hill, SC.  He was loved by a host of other cousins, relatives and friends.

My condolences go out to the family . I know Mr. McCaw was a special person to all of you. Death as we know in this world is a part of life that we will never be able to accept. But as you prepare to lay your loved one to rest, I encourage you to find comfort from our Heavenly Father (Psalm 83:18) word the Bible . Please know that "he" is a stronghold in the time of your distress. Nahum 1:7
